What is SIASS?
SIASS means Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Information, Advice and Support Service.
- We help children and young people with SEND, and their families.
- We give free, private (confidential), and fair (impartial) advice
- We help you understand your rights and speak up for yourself
- We support you to get the help you need in school or college
How quickly will we reply?
- First contact: within 2 working days
- Your caseworker replies (where assigned): within 5 working days
- Meetings: we need at least 2 weeks’ notice
What can you expect from us?
- We are fair and don’t take sides
- We help you set goals and plan next steps
- We help you feel confident to speak up
- You may get a named worker (not always)
- You should only need to tell your story once
- Support can by phone, email, in person or online
What we CAN do
- Explain SEND law and your rights
Example: helping you understand what should be in your EHCP
- Make things clear and easy to understand
Example: explaining what happens in an annual review
- Help you read and understand documents
Example: going through school reports or letters with you
- Give ongoing support when you need it
Example: answering questions as things change
- Help you prepare for meetings
Example: helping you write down what you want to say
- Help you plan what to do after meetings
Example: explaining your next steps if you’re unhappy with a decision
- Share useful websites and services
Example: signposting you to SEND support groups or information pages
What we CAN’T do
✖ Write emails or letters for you
✖ Tell you which school to choose
✖ Help with DLA, Blue Badge, or housing
✖ Give behaviour or mental health support
✖ Recommend specific professionals
✖ Go to every meeting
✖ Set up meetings for you
✖ Go to meetings instead of you
✖ Make schools or the Local Authority take action
